Case: Exclusive ChromaLuxe prints for nature photographer Chien Lee

There are projects where things fall into place quite naturally. Where people with their own expertise, passion, and geeky love of detail come together — and together create something that goes far beyond what we can achieve individually.

This is just such a project. A close collaboration between renowned nature photographer Chien Lee, Brian Rasmussen from Randers Regnskov and the specialists here at Nordic Digital Lab.

Together we have transformed unique moments from some of the world's most vulnerable natural areas into large, vibrant ChromaLuxe-print. Prints that not only make an overwhelming visual impression, but also actively support the work of preserving the very rainforests where the images were created.

From the depths of the rainforest to exclusive gallery quality

Chien Lee is one of the world's leading nature photographers. His work is characterized by a precision, patience and level of detail that can only be captured by a person who understands and respects nature up close.

When photographic art of this caliber is to be conveyed to an audience, it is crucial that the physical print itself carries exactly the same respect for detail that the photographer has put into his work. That is why we chose to transform the images into large ChromaLuxe prints. It is a printing technology that can reproduce colors, depth and structure with an intensity that gives nature photography a whole new layer of life.

Advice, material selection and shared professionalism

At Nordic Digital Lab, every print job starts with advice. Because even the absolute best technology requires the right choice of materials to allow the motif to unfold fully.

Together with Randers Regnskov, we went through the entire process – from optimizing color profiles to choosing formats.(ChromaLuxe is available in sizes ranging from 13 × 18 cm to a large format of 100 × 150 cm.) We also tested which finish best highlighted the colors of nature and captured the depth of darkness. We chose High Gloss because the surface creates a maximum wow effect and reproduces the colors with an incredible clarity that almost makes the subject stand out from the metal.

Our role in the process is never just to "print". Our job is to be the trusted specialist who translates the photographer's digital vision into a physical, lasting expression. Just as the photographer knows his camera settings down to the lowest ISO number, we know the materials, coatings and crucial technical details that elevate a photo print from solid quality to a definite work of art.

ChromaLuxe – The technology that brings out the details

A ChromaLuxe HD Metal Print differs significantly from traditional paper prints in that the colors are not simply laid on top of the surface. Through a process called thermal sublimation, the colors are instead vaporized and integrated directly into the special coating of the aluminum plate itself.

This advanced technique ensures:

A photo exhibition and auction that makes a real difference

As part of an important fundraising initiative, we at Nordic Digital Lab chose to donate a large number of these ChromaLuxe prints to a charity auction that Randers Regnskov held at the cinema in Randers.

The images were sold for a total of approximately 70,000 DKK, and the entire amount went uncut to the conservation of the endangered rainforest areas in Bagai. For us in the laboratory, this result means much more than just a technically successful print. It is living proof that when specialists do what they do best – together – the result can create noticeable value. Both for the artistic experience and for nature, which desperately needs our help and attention.

A strong collaboration that we are proud of

This collaboration is a project that we at Nordic Digital Lab look back on with pride. Not only because we helped support the important work of preserving the rainforest, but also because the process proves what happens when professionals with their own passions join forces.

It is the photographer who patiently captures the moment.
It is Randers Regnskov that skillfully conveys the meaning of nature.
And it is us who are allowed to contribute with the technology and craftsmanship that make it possible for the viewer to experience the smallest details of nature up close. Even for those of us who may never get the chance to stand in a humid rainforest in the middle of Borneo.
